What is Prayer?

Prayer is how we communicate with God. Our God is not someone who watches us from a distance, rather, He loves us and wants to be in a constant, personal, and close relationship with us. Jesus Christ, through his saving work on the cross, allowed us to have a direct line of communication with God through prayer, and is constantly interceding with God the Father on our behalf. At any moment in your life, through good times and hard times, you can lay down your burdens to Him.

Why do we pray?

Prayer is central to the Christian walk. Even though God knows everything we will say and everything that will happen to us, we are still called to live a life of prayer. God is not a genie, and often times it feels like our prayers are unanswered. But God is our Father, and like a child we come running into His arms, bringing our worries before Him like a child would to a parent. Even Jesus prays!

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)
