WHY ARE WE SO THICK HEADED?

“But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,’ for I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Matthew 9:13

As in most of Jesus' interactions with the Pharisees, Jesus has a way of challenging their self-righteous attitudes by pointing out that God’s ways are not our ways. This happened on the occasion when Jesus was criticized for eating with tax collectors and sinners.

It occurs to me that while we would much prefer to consider ourselves to be like Jesus, the nagging truth is that we are often much more like the Pharisees. We judge ourselves and others with a criticalness that suggests that we and not God are on the judgment seat. Our thoughts and communication focus on what we should do to get things right in the first place (self-righteousness), or what we can do to make amends if we have failed (sacrifice). When we do this, focus our attention on human efforts, we become just another link in the chain that shackles people to their burden of sin from which they have already lost hope of escape.

We don’t consider what God is doing in our life or the lives of others who, like ourselves, are struggling to understand the goodness and grace of God. Jesus continually pointed people to lift their gaze to heaven to see that God purposes to save and not to condemn. We are all fallen creatures who cannot change our nature to do or be good apart from God’s grace.

So if we wanted to truly be more like Jesus how would we approach one another? I am convinced (and convicted) that we would be ministers of grace who teach people to “lift up my eyes to the hills from whence comes my help. My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth.” Otherwise we are nothing more than dispensers of judgment and unwanted advice which helps no one.

Therefore Jesus says to you and to me, “Go and learn what this means: I desire mercy….” God’s heart is mercy toward us. Our sin brings its own condemnation which certainly requires a sacrifice of atonement. In God’s mercy He has provided the sacrifice in Christ Jesus. Our focus then should be to understand, practice and minister God’s heart of mercy pointing ever to the cross which alone can break the chains of bondage. Go, and learn what this means in your life. And then show it to others.

Graphic Artist, Richard Chavez, has suffered addiction to prescription drugs for the past 20 years. At the age of 26 he was diagnosed with anklosing spondylitis, a disease that causes chronic inflammation of the spine. Pain and disability were constant reminders of his human weakness. He was incapable of being the support that his wife and son needed.

Constant pain made it impossible for him to do what came easy for others. But God still answers prayer. On February 24, 2008, Richard stood before the congregation at Home Church and shared with deep emotion how God had delivered him from all the pills and empowered him to trust in God.

At the RISE 9 AM service, Richard’s son Chris, who sings and plays guitar with the RISE worship team, stepped from the stage to embrace his father, a gesture that touched us all. Both services were moved with the humility and brokenness in Richard’s life.

Within a couple of weeks Richard would be standing before hundreds of people during the closing moments of our Good Friday service, and there he would paint Christ’s sufferings. From the beginning of the song, Worlds Apart, to its closing words, we all waited with anticipation as we began to see the unfolding of the crown of thorns.

What is more remarkable is that Richard had never painted in front of a live audience. In hurried Silicon Valley, we all too often watch life pass us by, with little to remind us of God’s love and grace, demonstrated to a broken world. We are a church of imperfect people, seeking to walk with Christ in truth, where love, acceptance and forgiveness for others must reign in our hearts. We look forward to meeting you there.

Home church is a diverse church family, bridging the generations and is a multi-ethnic congregation.

Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. (Ephesians 4:15)
